Hi!
Reggie is doing great so far and loves his crate. He also lovesss the moose antler. Some things that have been an issue are:
biting hands/feet
biting clothes
going crazy at night and nipping at us
overall hes been good with peeing and pooping outside, but I think that is because we take him out often. (he has not signaled he needs to go outside yet).
he yaps at us when he is in a playful mood and not getting attention
when we are sitting at the dinner table, he jumps up on our legs
This is his crate. Its located in bar room next to the living room, where my dad works from home, and next to the kitchen. It is also close to the front door.
This is the area we are taking him to go potty. It is right outside our front door, next to a little deck. He is having some trouble realizing that the GRASS is where he needs to go to the bathroom. He has gone a couple times on the rocks and on the front porch and deck.

ReplyDelete1) The biting has to stop now, immediately. How to do? Look for the post on 'Growling or biting'. Understand that when you do the "Phoohey", this is not a play correction, this action mimics exactly what the dam would do to her puppy that was doing inappropriate and VERY disrespectful behavior. So, let me ask you a few questions.
1) Do you have a Learning String on Reggie? If not, make one and leave on his collar except when he is kenneled.
2) Are you using the "Phoohey"? If not, why not as that puppy will immediately understand your communication to mean, 'Stop it NOW!'.
3) How many times are you doing the "Phoohey" with ever firmer gripping of the muzzle? 3 times is what I recommend, then kennel the dog as in this situation the puppy is going 'to jail'.
4) How are you expending Reggie's energy? How many 'walks' are you doing with him each day on a ck cord? How is the training of the 'Step, Hup, Sit, Step, Off' going on an elevated table? Working a dog physically expends a great deal of energy.
5) If he has a mouth fetish (normal for a retriever breed with a strong Prey Drive), what chew toys does he have? Have you ordered white puppy canvas puppy bumpers to use to funnel his energy into a positive game of Puppy Play Retrieve.
6) How often are you doing Quiet Time? It should be done AT LEAST twice a day with a leash and everyone in the family can and should be doing it.

For the pooping/peeing area, take him farther out into the grass and clean the area is has already gone, the rocks, front porch and deck with white vinegar. Dogs eliminate by smell so you have to eliminate his smells where he has already gone and create a new area.

Is there any way you can get a full body photo, side profile and from the front of the head, of the sire and dam? It will help me determine what kind of Lab you have. That information will help us coach you on training these Labs. There IS a difference between a pet Lab and a Lab from working lines/field Lab.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
